Statement of Intent. Principles of Location Photography.

Statement of Intent. Principles of Location Photography, People and Portraits

Intentions/purpose of the Photography to be undertaken.

I have a great interest in portraiture Photography so I have chosen to do this Theme as I would like to learn more about this side to Photography.
On the Theme of People and Portraits I aim to produce Portraits of friends and family

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)

I have taken portraits and would like to develop further and become more creative in the overall effect with the image that I will produce, using photographers such as Alex Lake, Barry Read, Andrew Macpherson, and Anthony Saul as inspiration to help me.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why.

The camera I shall be using will be a Canon PowerShot S3 SLR
The Tripod I will use for still life Portrait Photography.
I shall also be using Photoshop for Editing.

Canon Powershot S3 SLR.

. 12x optical zoom lens
.  Optical image stabilizer
. 6.0 Megapixel
. 2.0'' vari-angle LCD
. 30fps VGA movies with stereo sound and photo in movie feature
. DIGIC 11, iSAPS and flexizone AF/AE for fast, precise results and 2.3fps continuous shooting
. 20 shooting modes and my colours photo effects
. High ISO Auto and ISO 800 for low light flexibility
.Widescreen (16:9) recording

Techniques that will be used and how they will convey the visual message.

I shall try out different settings on the Camera, like exposure times, shutter speeds, aperture settings, Lens Zoom, and depth of field.
I will be using a Tripod for Portrait Photography.
By using Photoshop it will help by allowing me to edit some of the Photos that I choose and also to be able to make them into Black and Whites and also H.D.R images. By changing the exposure this will help with any sombre effects that I want to capture.
I will also use props, make up and mirrored reflection to help create visual effects on some the images.

How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message.

Experimenting at different times of the day to get different light quality to deliver the atmospheric image I want to capture.
In different weather conditions, and in different venues and using artificial light.
And at location making the most of the best natural light that there is and how best to use it.

Safety Considerations.

. Taking care of any Equipment used
. Keeping an eye on weather conditions and making sure Equipment is kept dry.
. Making sure Location is safe.
. Asking permission first for any shots of people especially Children that will be taken.

Statement of Intent. Principles of Location Photography, Reportage.

Intentions/purpose of the Photography to be undertaken.

I am choosing to follow the Reportage Theme as I have always had a major interest in Event Photography particularly in Concerts and taking Photo of Celebrities. I have had some success in publishing some celebrity photos.
I am hoping to visit special Events such as a Fun Fair, Alton Towers Fireworks, Scarefest, and a medieval themed event. I will be producing images which will teach me how to use the Manual settings such as using slow Shutter speeds, Aperture settings and the ISO and also using depth of field.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)

I like to attend Events such as Concerts and Gigs and from these have been inspired by various concert programmes of Music Artists where the photographers captured the Artist in motion performing on stage and also using a set to photograph by using fashion, lighting and props to create a scene and image that goes with their look and style.
I have been inspired by Carrie Musgrave and Carsten Windhorst who are Music Photgraphers that cover Event Photography.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

The camera I shall be using will be a Canon PowerShot S3 SLR
The Tripod I will use for keeping the camera steady when trying out long shutter speeds.
I shall also be using Photoshop for Editing if I feel the Photograph needs more effect.

. Optical image stabilizer
. 6.0 Megapixel
. 2.0'' vari-angle LCD

Techniques that will be used and how they will convey the visual message.

I shall try out different settings on the Camera, like exposure times, shutter speeds, aperture settings, Lens Zoom, and depth of field. With some of the Events like Fireworks and the Fun Fair I will be shooting at night so I will have to use the Manual settings.
I will also shoot different times of the day and if I im in a venue with low lighting then I will have to use Manual and the apature to allow more light into the camera.
I will also be use Photoshop.

How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message.

Taking the Photos at different times of the day depending on the Event, and assessing what light is best for what I am wanting to portray.
If working inside a venue with lighting used, then I shall try different settings on the camera to make the best possible image and to make sure that I dont shoot into the light directly.
I will especially practise night photography to try out different shutter speeds.

Safety Considerations.

. Taking care of any Equipment used
. Keeping an eye on weather conditions and making sure Equipment is kept dry.
. Making sure Location is safe.
. Asking permission first for any shots of people especially Children that will be taken.
. If in a a busy venue keep Equipment safe and out of danger to any one around.

Outdoor Photography I have Taken

All Photographs have been taken using a Canon Powershot S3 SLR

This Photograph is part of the Alton Towers castle. I have then used Photoshop to edit this to give it a dark and atmospheric look.

A black and white image of a rollercoaster I edited. I had to take this on a fast shutter speed to capture the movement of the ride.

For this close up shot I have used the Macro Mode to make the Flower stand out better.

Taken in the Lake District. I then edit the Photo in Photoshop to a H.D.R image.
 (High Dynamic Range)

.
This was taken the night of the Supermoon using a tripod. It was taken from my bedroom window. I like the effect of the Branches in front of the moon's glaze, but I would of liked to have had a more detailed showing of the moon.

Again I took this the night of the Supermoon, I had to use full Zoom on my lens and I used the Tripod to keep the full Zoom still. By zooming in I have managed to capture the moons surface better.

This Photograph was taken at the Churnet Valley Railway of an old steam train and the train driver who was about to change the tracks. The photo in colour I felt did not do it justice the photo needed to be made to look older so I changed this to a Black and white image.

This I took on a cliff as the sunset was approaching. I think the sun looks more like a bright star by the way the camera has captured the rays. I think the dark silhouetted rock makes the suns reflecton in the water more prominent and it has a clear vanishing point.

This was taken at the Lake District. I Edited the photo in Photoshop to make the contrast brighter like the water and also the swan whiter. I wanted it to look more like a painting which I think it does.

As the sun was going down on the River Themes I captured this image from a boat. I like the size of the sun and the beams shining down and the reflection in the water. It captures the golden hour.

Another moon photograph you can see the dark shades well.

Portrait,Music and Creative Photography I have taken

Creative Photography.

Some Photographs that I have taken with Friends practising different creative ways of portrait photography. I changed a lot to black and white images that I have also edited in photoshop. These photographs were taken using my Canon Power shot S3 IS and a few taken using my mobile phone camera.

I wanted to try some shots of my model blowing bubbles. I had to use a faster shutter speed for this but I think it came out well and I like the dark background that makes my model's face stand out and captures the bubbles well. I also like the small depth of field in this photo.

A friends wedding that I attended. In the first photo taken just after the ceremony I tried to show a natural image of them both. The one below I changed to a black and white photo using photoshop.

These two Images of Myself were also inspired by the singer Paloma Faith Photos taken again by Anthony Saul. using a Vintage look I created on myself, I edited them both in Photo shop to Black and white and changed the Exposure, I then put make up on and used the smudge effect to create a colourful background to make myself stand out which I added myself to put my own take on them.

A image I took of myself on a mobile phone camera and edited to a black and white and change the exposer. I used ripped up tights to put over my face.

This image was of my neighbour's child who was looking through my mirror I liked her expresstion her face  so I asked her to hold it while I got my camera out. I changed it again in photoshop I thought it would make her look as though she was scared at what she was seeing in the mirror and it would look better as a black and white with a silhouette look about her face. The shadow of white light at the top of the photo was because of the light that was on next to her but it allowed me to get better shadows on her face.
I couldn't find a way to get rid of this which I think would look better if it wasn't there.

same person again, another facial expresston I liked. This was created by the use of make up on her face and then edited to black and white.

One of me again taken on a Mobile phone camera, using ripped tights over my face and hair extenstions. I messed around with the phone settings and came up with this.

I wanted to try some reflection photography so by using a silver foil balloon I got my model to stand next to it and hold it up and look into it. I decided a close up shot would look good and I liked the effect the balloon as the head and body become distorted.

These two photos above were taken as a bit of fun. Dressing the model up and using a wig and some make up I positioned her to capture this scary look. The first image was taken as if she was behind some bars which actually were the stair banister. I prefer the second shot to the first though, as the stair banister looked too bright when I edited it in photoshop. In the second photo I liked the model's wild scary expression.

                                        Music Photography

Taken of the singer Pink at her concert at Alton Towers
using a Canon Powershot S3 IS.

All the three images above are very clear close up shots showing the singer performing.
